Top 5 Beach Cleanup Tips
For Kids From 1 to 92
Beach cleanups are a wonderful way to socialize (from a distance), exercise, and energize you with the spirit of making the world a better place.
We invite people of all ages to make this a regular outdoor activity!
1. Safety First
Pack some safety. Add a pair of "trash tweezers" (or a trash grabber) and gloves for safe picking. Remember to stay protected from the sun and hydrated along the way.
2. Bucket or Bag
Any container will do. Your average shopping bag is just fine. So are buckets, open milk cartons, empty cardboard oatmeal containers, and reusable canvas tote bags.
3. Spotting Trash
HINT: It can be sneaky. Look for piles of seaweed and driftwood. They act as nature's nets, in a way. They capture floating trash and carry it to shore for us to easily pick up.
4. Squat, Don't Bend
Your back will thank you. Try bending your knees and squatting to pick up each piece of trash. Your leg muscles are far stronger than your back, so you'll avoid next-day soreness.
5. Dispose Properly
Keep trash permanently out of the ocean. Many beaches have designated trash cans on the sand. If not, chances are one is nearby. Worst case scenario, hold onto the trash to dispose at home.
Creating A Habit
We hope that any beach cleanup activity is more than a one time gift of your time and energy. Our trash problem isn't shrinking. That's why we hope you can commit to cleaning up our shorelines regularly.
A cleanup doesn't have to be your whole purpose for going to the beach. But make it part of every trip.
